Our four-day event is scheduled so you don't have to miss work and features a daily workshop of your choice where you can learn from an outstanding writer and have the chance to work one-on-one with your instructor and access a great writer-in-residence.

We're also featuring evening readings, a barbecue get-together and seminars on publishing your work. All this and the experience of intensive study in writing at Canada's most prestigious university for a price that other workshops can't beat.

The Taddle Creek Summer Writers' Workshop is a rare opportunity to experience the ambience of the "world within a world" of the University of Toronto's famous Hart House while having the benefits, stimulation and excitement close at-hand not only of great writers but of Canada's largest city.

Science fiction is one of the most popular publishing categories in the world, and Canadian writers are at the forefront, with their works being eagerly bought by major New York publishers.

You'll learn a thematic approach to plotting, how to create characters appropriate to your theme, how to design an alien world and alien beings, the various subgenres of science fiction, how to do research for writing SF, the rules for success in SF publishing, and how and where to market and promote your work, both in Canada and the U.S.

Robert J. Sawyer is Past President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He won the Nebula Award (the "Academy Award" of the SF field) for his novel The Terminal Experiment; he is also the author of the novels Starplex, Frameshift, and Factoring Humanity, all of which were finalists for the Hugo Award (SF's international "People's Choice" award). Workshop Fee: Cdn$412.00 ($400.00 for workshop, Cdn$12.00 for Registration fee); about US$280. Includes one four-day workshop, access to Writer-in-Residence Barry Callaghan, a one-on-one consultation with Robert J. Sawyer, one barbecue, three seminars on publishing and writing information, two evening readings by the faculty, and the opportunity to participate in open readings by the students. Note: University of Toronto workshop fee does not include accommodation. Accommodation information will be sent to registrants upon request.

Students must submit a sample of ten pages of prose before the registration deadline of June 25, 1999.

Adults (18 years of age or older) may register. Registrations are accepted by registering in person at 158 St. George Street, by phone at (416) 978 2400, by fax at (416) 978 6666, by mail or through our web site at www.continuallyuoft.utoronto.ca. This form must be accompanied by the applicable fees. Payment may be made by Visa, MasterCard, money order, or cheque payable in Canadian funds to the University of Toronto.

Your Official Income Tax Receipt indicates the location, date and time of your course. It will be mailed or given to you upon payment of fees. Save your Official Income Tax! It is your evidence of registration needed for refunds. Duplicate income tax receipts will not be issued.

A portion of the tuition fee may be refunded if the School of Continuing Studies receives from the registrant a written Notice of Withdrawal, postmarked before the applicable deadline. The Notice of Withdrawal is printed on the reverse of the Income Tax Receipt. $32 is withheld when withdrawal is at least 15 days before the workshop commences; 25% is withheld when withdrawal is before the workshop commences. No refund will be given once the workshop has commenced. No refund is granted after the deadlines. Processing of refund cheques requires a few weeks.
